Joseph M. Reid’s tenure with IS Architecture has spanned more than eleven years. He provides the firm with his indelible, functional design as well as expertise in schematic design, design development, construction documentation, and construction administration for custom residences, residential remodels, and historic preservation projects.  He is experienced in researching and implementing national and local code requirements, and processing projects through local governing agencies.

Mr. Reid is currently working closely with many homeowners throughout San Diego who wish to expand their homes and make necessary upgrades to meet their family’s needs. His penchant for great design is proven time and time again with several “Best of the Year” architectural awards and frequent features in local and national magazine publications. Particularly with historic homes, Mr. Reid makes an effective use of historic detailing and finishes, while incorporating modern appliances and technology, to craft a beautiful and functional design. With every new challenge, he looks for creative ways to incorporate natural light and establish an open flow throughout the entire home. His design talent and proven experience will see each client’s goals and aspirations to fruition, often surpassing their greatest expectations.

One of his most notable endeavors to date is serving as the Project Manager for the rehabilitation of the University House the Chancellor’s residence at the University of California, San Diego. The residence, a 12,000 square foot Pueblo Revival style sprawling adobe mansion residence with two foot thick walls, was built in 1950-1951 of unreinforced adobe on a prominent coastal bluff. The complex project involves coordinating ten sub-consultants, working with an extensive community based Advisory Group, and preparation of a Building Condition Assessment and Rehabilitation Recommendation Report. Mr. Reid, together with Ms. Stiegler, identified the defining features of the building’s historic character, the condition of the building, and provided an evaluation of its significance and integrity using the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards.
